Dear friends,
Naptime proved to be the best time yesterday to push record on this video. As is the case for many parents and caregivers, this is time of rest for the littles, but especially me. The daily rhythm of quiet gives me a chance to collect my thoughts, read a book, send an email, or just sit down for Pete’s sake!
The Examen invites a similar hush into our day. Traditionally this is a once a day prayer, even twice a day for some. But it can still be an excellent window into the inner life when used on occasion like today. Within these quiet moments of prayer there’s always an invitation to rest in God’s love.
I find this practice is a gentle way to acknowledge the threshold between not only days, but seasons, too. The passing of winter into spring, as well as the ongoing season of Lent can stir up quite a bit. Our eyes are opened anew to the somber reality of sin in a broken world, in our own broken hearts. Simultaneously, at least in the northern hemisphere, hope emerges from tree buds and green shoots.
Holding both the heartache of Lent and the energy of spring, let’s pray.
